📰 News we're reading

1. Oklahoma City soccer complex expands to attract national tournaments (news9.com) — A major expansion of the NOKC Soccer complex at C.B. Cameron Park in Oklahoma City aims to add 20 full-size fields, a 7,000-square-foot clubhouse, and on-site medical support. Organizers say the upgrades are key to landing regional and national youth tournaments, boosting local tourism dollars and giving Oklahoma City kids more high-level play without traveling.

2. County commissioners in negotiations with Creoks Behavioral Health Services as new mental health provider (news9.com) — A nearly $40 million behavioral health center on East Grand Blvd in Oklahoma City is nearing completion, and county commissioners are negotiating with Creoks Behavioral Health Services to run it. Leaders say the goal is to divert people in crisis from jail into treatment, with competency evaluations guiding whether nonviolent offenders receive services or incarceration when the center opens in early 2026.

3. Oklahoma lawmakers defend ‘behind-the-meter' law amid AI data center concerns (news9.com) — Oklahoma City leaders are spotlighting a new ‘behind-the-meter’ law they say shields residents from higher electric bills as AI data centers and other big power users eye Oklahoma. Sen. Paul Rosino of Oklahoma City, former Rep. Jason Dunnington, and Gov. Kevin Stitt argue the law forces large facilities to build and pay for their own power, aiming to protect local ratepayers while still attracting tech investment.

4. New digital resource for Oklahoma homeless youth (kfor.com) — A new online Homeless Youth Handbook, announced from Oklahoma City, is giving young people across Oklahoma facing homelessness a free, plain-language guide to their legal rights. The resource covers everything from school protections and IDs to public benefits, mental health, and employment, and residents can suggest improvements by emailing the project team through January 15.

5. Oklahomans give over $300,000 to GoFundMe campaigns (kfor.com) — Oklahoma City residents are among more than 100,000 Oklahomans who used GoFundMe this year, helping raise over $345,000 for community and business support across the state. From rebuilding a Choctaw animal rescue to aiding wildfire and house fire victims, the donations highlight how neighbors step up for emergencies, medical needs, and everyday bills.
