Police: Man Killed In Richmond Head-On Crash Was From Wakefield

Richmond police say on July 1 a pickup truck traveling on Rt. 138 veered into the oncoming lane and hit a car.

RICHMOND, RI — A man killed in a head-on crash on Rt. 138 near the Richmond Elementary School has been identified as Howard Melish, 73, of 84 Lake St. in Wakefield.

Sergeant Michael Lawing of the Richmond Police Department made the announcement today and said the investigation into the crash continues.

On July 1 at around 3:45 p.m., Richmond police responded to a two-vehicle crash near 190 Kingstown Road. Their initial investigation revealed that the driver a large pickup truck veered into the westbound lane as he rounded the corner at the school and struck an oncoming car nearly head-on.

The male driver was killed, and his female passenger, who was seriously injured, was extricated by first responders and taken to Rhode Island hospital. Police say the occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seat belts.

Police today did not release the name of the driver of the truck. More details are expected as the investigation continues.
