Lee) standout just earned a major front-office promotion with the Chicago Cubs, becoming vice president of pitching. Harrisonburg native Tyler Zombro, 31, rose from undrafted free agent to Triple-A pitcher, then overcame a frightening skull fracture before transitioning into a key role shaping pitchers at both the major- and minor-league levels.
   

• New fund created to honor life of Waynesboro graduate Blake Durrett (newsleader.com) — Staunton-area residents can now support a new memorial fund honoring Waynesboro High School graduate Blake Durrett, with donations handled through the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge in Staunton. The fund will help children at Ruth’s WARM House cover essentials and activities like camps, lessons, and tutoring, continuing Durrett’s legacy of joy and support for kids.
   

• VDOT to Host Public Hearing on January 14 for South Street Safety Improvements (royalexaminer.com) — Staunton’s VDOT district office is overseeing a $4 million safety upgrade for South Street in Front Royal, and written comments can be mailed directly to the Staunton office. The January 14, 2026 public hearing will outline new crosswalks, signal upgrades, and raised medians aimed at protecting pedestrians and easing traffic through one of the town’s busiest corridors.
