Area Students to Receive Awards November 3 at Festival of Books

Free Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books at UW-Milwaukee at Waukesha

SIX AREA STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE ESSAY CONTEST AWARDS NOVEMBER 3 DURING SOUTHEAST WISCONSIN FESTIVAL OF BOOKS

Waukesha, Wis. – November 2, 2018 – Six local middle and high school students will receive awards for essays they entered in the Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books student essay contest sponsored by Century Fence. The awards ceremony will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at the Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books at UW-Milwaukee at Waukesha, 1500 University Drive.

  • Caroline Olen, First Place High School, Menomonee Falls
  • Patrick Watson, Second Place High School, Waukesha South
  • Chioma Aririguzo, Third Place High School, Waukesha West
  • Tremieah Kirk, First Place Middle School, Les Paul Middle School
  • Roberto Tinoco, Second Place Middle School, Les Paul Middle School
  • Shanielah Kirk, Third Place Middle School, Les Paul Middle School

First place winners will receive $250 each. The second-place prize is $175, and those in third place will receive $75 each. Area judges selected the student winners based on their thoughtful and well-written essays of 600-750 words for high school students and 400-500 words for middle school students.

Now in its ninth year, this year’s festival theme is American Stories. “Participants will tell their own American stories while reflecting on our shared characteristics and values,” said event chair Duane Stein. Student essays revolved around the same theme.

The Festival of Books is November 2-3 on the University of Milwaukee at Waukesha campus at 1500 North University Drive in Waukesha. It is a community celebration of literacy and the arts, where local and national authors and readers of all ages come together to enjoy presentations, performances, creativity and conversation. The UW-Waukesha Foundation organizes the event in cooperation with partners in the community.
