WAUKESHA, WI — A former music teacher and composer who taught in Waukesha for years is hoping to go on his latest adventure, as family is trying to raise enough money for a specialized bicycle that will allow their wheelchair-bound and bed-ridden family member to go on a bicycle ride.

According to information posted by family members on a GoFundMe page, Jim and Sue Machan used to be avid adventurers, going to the far reaches of the globe. A little over 10 years ago, this all changed as a wound on Jim's foot incurred on a hiking trip never healed properly due to a bone tumor.

One of the things they enjoyed most at home was the simple bicycle ride. When the amputation happened, they invested in a recumbent bicycle for Jim. Over time, more complications have come about, leaving Jim wheelchair-bound and bed-ridden.

Recently, the family learned of a Netherlands-based company that developed a motorized wheelchair bicycle. Called the VeloPlus, it allows an able-bodied person to take a wheelchair-bound person in a tandem ride.

Family says all of the components and shipping comes in just over $12,000, and are asking for the public's help to fund the cost of the VeloPlus and additional fees associated with the GoFundMe campaign.
