Green Bay Packers Among 50 Most Valuable Sports Franchises

Football is still the most popular sport in America, where NFL teams hauled in about $8.2 billion in shared revenue last season.

In world rankings, football doesn’t even make the top 10 most popular sports — unless it’s “association football,” or soccer. But the rougher version of football played in the United States is incredibly lucrative, dominating a ranking by Forbes of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.

Twenty-nine NFL teams made the cut, compared with eight basketball teams, seven soccer teams and six baseball teams.

The Green Bay Packers ranked No. 26 on the list with a value of $2.55 billion. The team's value increased 9 percent over last year's figure.

Collectively, the NFL teams hauled in about $8.2 billion in revenue, or $255 million per team, according to the Forbes ranking of the most valuable sports teams.

That’s not a surprise, given the most recent Gallup Poll that showed football is still America’s favorite spectator sport. Popularity is sliding some after criticism of domestic violence by NFL players, the physical and mental toll of the sport and national anthem protests, but it’s still the favorite of 37 percent of Americans.

That poll showed 11 percent of American adults prefer basketball, 9 percent prefer baseball and 7 percent prefer soccer.
The Dallas Cowboys topped the Forbes ranking and is valued at $4.8 billion, up 14 percent from the year prior. Here’s the breakdown of the top 50. For more, click here:
