Heritage Christian Schools’ middle and high school students participated in the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) annual Patriot’s Pen Competition this fall. Heritage’s District winners in the middle school division are 8th graders Elizabeth Hendricks (New Berlin), Kiarra Flores (Waukesha), Mia Skarlatos (West Allis), Paige Poser (Milwaukee), and 7th grader Ariel Hergert (Waukesha). These students will be invited to the Patriotic Citizen Award Ceremony and will receive a $25 prize, a certificate, and a flag that has been flown over the Capitol.
The competition’s theme for 2018-19 was “Why I Honor the American Flag”. Students are judged on knowledge of the theme, theme development, and clarity of the ideas presented.
Heritage Junior, Grace Kidd (Elm Grove), participated in the Voice of Democracy competition, speaking on the 2018-19 theme of “Why My Vote Matters”. Recorded submissions are judged on originality, content, and delivery of the spoken piece. She won 3rd place in the District and moved on to the State level. She received $100 for placing at Districts and will also be invited to the award ceremony.
