Waukesha Police, Fire Rescue Mother Duck's 10 Chicks
"The the duck kept running up to us and then to the storm drain so my brother and I decided to follow her," Dawn Zamber said.
WAUKESHA, WI — A mother duck has her 10 ducklings back thanks to the quick actions of a Waukesha woman and a team from the police and fire departments.
Waukesha resident Dawn Zamber said she was walking in the area of Barstow and Broadway on Wednesday when she happened upon a distressed duck walking around a storm drain.
"The the duck kept running up to us and then to the storm drain so my brother and I decided to follow her," Zamber said.

When she looked down the drain, she saw the duck's 10 chicks at the bottom of the drain. Zamber told Patch that she knew a storm was coming and that she was concerned that storm waters would sweep the chicks away.
She called the police and fire department, and officers and firefighters came to their rescue. Working together, the first responders lifted the iron grate of the storm drain and scooped up the chicks, depositing them one-by-one in a bucket until they were all collected.

Each of the chicks was released a safe distance away and the mother duck was reunited with her chicks.
"Just in time too, it started down pouring shortly after, and they surely would've been swept away," Zamber told Patch. Zamber said the police officers and firefighters did a great job and that she was proud of the compassion shown.
