A senior got them going, and a freshman finished the job.
Carly Richter and Dani Rhodes provided the scoring as Waukesha West defeated Middleton 2-1 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the WIAA girls soccer state tourney.
West (18-4) meets either DePere or Kenosha Tremper in Friday's semifinals.
Richter tallied on a header in the 10th minute, providing exactly the start Coach Dave Zindler was looking for.
"Our idea was to attack like crazy in the first 15 minutes and see if we could get a goal," Zindler said. "Then they'd have to unlock their defense."
Middleton had allowed only thee goals in its last 10 games, but Rhodes made it 2-0 in the 66th minute. The Cardinals pulled one back 30 seconds later but it would be all they would get against keeper Jessie Losiniecki.
