WEEKEND PLANNER: Prepare for Fall at the Retzer Nature Center

These free workshops will be presented by Waukesha County Parks and Land Use staff and UW-Extension Master Gardeners.

WAUKESHA – Prepare for fall by attending the Fall Workshop Event at Retzer Nature Center (S14 W28167 Madison Street, Waukesha, WI) on Saturday, October 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

These free workshops will be presented by Waukesha County Parks and Land Use staff and UW-Extension Master Gardeners. The workshop schedule includes:

8:30 a.m. – 9 a.m. Getting the Garden Ready for Winter: The garden might be winding down for the season; however, there is a lot of work to do before winter. In this presentation, learn how to prepare your garden for the winter months so your spring garden will be healthy and flourish. We will cover garden clean-up, late season planting of trees and shrubs, along with planting spring flowering bulbs.

9:15 a.m. – 10 a.m. Turn Over a New LEAF – Mulching & Composting: Easy Fall Yard Care: Better than burning! Learn how to mulch large amount of leaves into your lawn, or create a large leaf compost pile for quick break-down. Tips on general composting provided, along with fall yard care best practices that don’t make your neighbors run to shut the windows!

10 – 11:30 a.m. Fall Exploration Hike to the Oak Savanna: Take an autumn walk to the Owen Williams Oak Savanna at Retzer Nature Center. We will interpret autumn colors, such as Aspens, Hickories, Elms, Ashes, Sugar Maples and look at the White, Bur and Red Oaks. We will also discuss the conditions of local ecology and land use history that account for the savanna.
