1st Youth Police Academy Comes To Cleveland Heights

The inaugural Academy will be open to residents between the ages of 12 and 16. The Academy is free to residents.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH -- Cleveland Heights Police are planning the city's first Youth Police Academy for this summer. The department said this is another attempt to expand outreach to the community it serves.

The Youth Academy will be held at the Cleveland Heights Police Academy, 2595 Noble Road, from August 6 through August 10. Attendees will be at the Academy from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. throughout that week.

Participants will learn about the different units within the Cleveland Heights Police Department and discuss the challenges facing young people. The Academy is open to residents between the ages of 12 and 16. Lunch will be served daily and there is no charge for attendance.

"The Police Department is excited to offer this experience to the youth in our community and believe it will be a great opportunity for them to get to know the Police Officers who serve the community," said Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg in a social media post.

Some of the topics that will be discussed during the Academy include: the law of arrest and search and seizure, evidence processing, teens' perception of rights, SWAT and Bomb squad info, and bike patrol. There will also be a K9 demonstration.

Transportation to the Academy will not be provided. Participants with special needs can contact the department directly.
