Don't Let Holiday Packages Get Stolen: Tips From Police

With the Christmas and Hanukkah rapidly approaching, porch pirates will be at peak prowling. Make sure your gifts don't get snatched.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — Since the rise of Amazon, and online shopping in general, holiday package theft is as predictable as clockwork. Orders are delivered while people are at work, and so-called porch pirates snatch the would-be gifts before anyone is home. It's become a common seasonal crime.

To help protect residents from being victimized this year, Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg shared a series of tips for safe holidays. She laid out a series of tactics to prevent package thefts.

a. Leave special instructions on where to deliver a package, such as on the side or back of the house so it is out of sight.
b. Request a Signature Delivery Option.
c. Have the package delivered to a family member or trusted friend who you know will be home., Or, if your employer permits, have the package delivered to your workplace.
d. Use a delivery company that has a tracking service so that you can monitor the package online.
e. Use the “in-store pick up” as an alternative to home delivery.

She also provided some helpful tips for the old-fashioned, brick-and-mortar shoppers.

Shoppers should always be aware of their surroundings, and should keep their keys in their hands when approaching their car, she said. If you've go into a store to shop, when you get back to your car, check the back seat and make sure no is lurking inside.

Park cars in well-lit areas and always check to make sure your car doors are locked. Any valuables or property you're leaving in the vehicle should be stowed in the trunk.

Finally, make sure your car has gas in it and is in good running order. If you're in an accident, pull your vehicle over, in a well-lit and populated area. Keep your cell phone near you, in case you need to contact police.

Mecklenburg also had tips for brave souls venturing into Northeast Ohio winters on their feet, or on a bicycle.

a. Be alert and aware of your surroundings.
b. Wear bright clothing, especially at night, so motorists can see you.
c. Keep your cell phone close at hand.
d. Carry a flashlight.
e. Avoid dark or deserted areas; use well-lit routes.
f. Walk or bike with someone else if possible.
