Goodyear Blimp To Fly Over John Carroll Football Game

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH — Saturday will be a special day in University Heights. When John Carroll takes on Mount Union for OAC gridiron dominance, and Blue Streaks legend London Fletcher is recognized for his outstanding collegiate career, the Goodyear Blimp will circle overhead.

“It will be a special day for our community as we welcome London home and welcome the Goodyear Blimp to Don Shula Stadium for the first time,” said Michelle Morgan, senior director of athletics. “I can think of no better way to commemorate our 100th year of athletics at JCU, as well as the 150th season of college football.”

The game will start at 1:30 p.m. at Don Shula Stadium on John Carroll's University Heights campus. Both John Carroll and Mount Union are currently 2-0 and 1-o in conference play. The two teams have been locked in a fierce rivalry over the past few years.

At halftime of the game, Fletcher will recognized by John Carroll. A graduate of the class of 1998, Fletcher had a sterling collegiate career. He was twice a first-team All-American, the Football Gazette's 1997 Division III Linebacker of the Year, and set single-game (29) and single-season (202) tackling records as a Blue Streak. He is the first John Carroll alum to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Fletcher went on to an outstanding NFL career, winning a Super Bowl and being named to the Pro Bowl four times. He went undrafted after leaving John Carroll.

The Goodyear Blimp has never flown over John Carroll University. The airship has been an iconic sports feature since 1955 and has circled more than 2,000 games.

ESPN Cleveland 950 AM will host a live pregame show outside the stadium, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fans can buy tickets to the game online and the John Carroll athletics website will host a live stream of the broadcast. The radio broadcast can be heard on WJCU 88.7 FM, and online.
