Shooting Near Noble Elementary School: Suspect In Custody

Gunshots were fired near Noble Elementary on Wednesday morning, Cleveland Heights police said.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — Gunshots were fired near Noble Elementary School on Wednesday morning, police announced.

At 10:25 a.m., gunshots were fired near the north side of Noble Elementary, 1293 Ardoon Street. Investigators believe a woman and her mother were sitting in their car, outside the school, when the woman's ex-boyfriend drove up in his car.

The man exited his car and walked toward the women, Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg said. The woman tried to drive away and, as she was pulling away, the man pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the car, Mecklenburg said.

Neither woman inside the car was hurt and no one else was hit by the gunfire, Mecklenburg said.

The woman drove to the Cleveland Heights Police Department for help immediately after the shooting.

Officers arrived at Noble Elementary and helped school officials to secure the school and ensure everyone inside the building was safe. The school was placed on lockdown and officers investigated the incident.

The suspect had driven away before officers arrived. Detectives were able to locate the suspect's SUV near Superior and Euclid in East Cleveland. The suspect was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, Mecklenburg said.

Charges have not yet been filed against the suspect.

The Heights Schools issued the following statement about the lockdown:

At approximately 10:30 a.m. today, Noble Elementary School initiated a Level 2 Lockdown at the direction of Cleveland Heights Police. Police say there was a possible domestic dispute involving two adults in the area of Montevista Road and Noble Road, in which one individual fired a weapon at the other’s vehicle. No one was injured in this incident. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 11:40 a.m. after a suspect was taken into custody, and law enforcement determined that there was no threat to the safety of our students and staff. Police are remaining at the school as an additional safety precaution.
