Thousands Without Power On East Side

Powerful storms on Friday night have left much of Northeast Ohio, and much of the east side, in the dark.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — Thousands of people are without power in Cleveland and the eastern suburbs. FirstEnergy said it expects to restore power to the majority of customers by 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Powerful thunderstorms roared across Northeast Ohio on Friday. Multiple lighting strikes, sheets of rain and cutting winds brought down trees and power lines. Here are the reported outages for various suburbs:

  • Beachwood — 171
  • Cleveland Heights — 4,000
  • Lyndhurst — 3,600
  • Mayfield Heights — 3,800
  • Shaker Heights — 3,900

While some houses and cars were damaged, no one was hurt in the storm, Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg said in a social media post.

"However, there are still wires and trees down that will need to be cleared. The hardest hit area of the city was west of Lee Road and south of Cedar. While many of you want to go out and survey the damage to your neighborhoods, we are cautioning you to avoid going near any wires that are down as they may be live. Also some of the trees that came down may have wires underneath that you can’t see. Our main concern is everyone’s safety," she said.

FirstEnergy crews and police officers are still working to clean up the city. If there is an emergency, call 911. Power outages can be reported and tracked online.
