Oil Kings bring hockey title back to OKC

OKC Youth Hockey teams win gold and place third in out-of-state competitions

Oklahoma City Youth Hockey Association (OKCYHA) teams enjoyed winning ways this weekend – the U14 team winning gold and the U10 team placing third in out-of-state competitions.

The Oil Kings Bantam team won all four of their games at the Kansas City Winter Classic, outscoring their opponents 14-2 to take the U14 Championship title.

The Kings thrashed the KC Stars 6-0 on Friday night before blanking the KC Mavs 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. They booked their place in the finals with a 4-1 win over the Champaign Chiefs in the late game Saturday night.

The Championship game was played Sunday afternoon and the Kings comfortably turned back St. Peter’s Spirit 3-1, hoisting the cup as the only unbeaten team in their division.

Over in Omaha, Nebraska OKC’s Squirt (U10) team earned a very creditable 3rd place at the Matt Thurber Memorial Tournament.

In their final game the Oil Kings avenged a first-round loss to #3-seed Fremont, using an OT goal for a hard fought 3-2 win. The King’s 16-goal haul was only bested by #1 seed Omaha.
