Former Petersburg sheriff's deputy claims discrimination from sheriff's office (wric.com) — A former Petersburg sheriff’s deputy says he was pushed out of the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office after refusing to shave a medically exempt beard, and has filed discrimination complaints with state and federal civil rights agencies. He also believes tensions rose after he ran for Hopewell sheriff, and is now looking for work while the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reviews his case.

2. Petersburg breaks ground on what judge calls 'new temple of justice' (progress-index.com) — Petersburg has officially broken ground on an $80 million courthouse complex that will consolidate all three city courts and anchor a new municipal plaza downtown. The project will replace aging court facilities, close part of East Tabb Street for a pedestrian plaza, and eventually add a new city hall and parking deck, marking a major step in the city’s financial and civic comeback.
   

3. Petersburg police prepare for casino opening with multi-agency security briefing (wtvr.com) — Petersburg Police are coordinating with more than six agencies to get ahead of traffic, crime, and crowd issues before Live! Casino Petersburg opens. Local leaders heard lessons from Portsmouth’s casino launch as they prepare for an estimated 100,000 visitors a month coming into the city and surrounding area.
   

4. Petersburg Gas Company building, other historic sites get state landmark designation (wric.com) — An 1851 gas company building in Petersburg has just been added to the Virginia Landmarks Register, recognizing its long role in supplying gas to homes, businesses, and government. State preservation officials say the building’s Civil War damage and later renovations trace the evolution of the gas industry in Virginia and the nation, and it may now move toward national historic recognition.
   

5. Moorhead State's Strand among Five finalists for Harlon Hill Trophy on AP Division II All-America football teams (kfgo.com) — A Virginia Union running back from Petersburg Curtis Allen, has been named first-team All-America on the AP Division II squad and is a finalist for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy. The nationwide list highlights standout players from 44 schools, but Allen’s recognition puts a Petersburg athlete in the national college football spotlight.
