SAN JOSE, CA — A search of the home of the suspected VTA mass shooter revealed approximately 22,000 rounds of ammunition, 12 firearms, apparent Molotov Cocktails and multiple cans of gasoline, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

In a news release Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said that the suspected shooter, 57-year-old VTA employee Samuel Cassidy, was “prepared to use his firearms to take as many lives as he possibly could” and that the shooting that killed nine of Cassidy’s coworkers “was a planned event.”

No motive has been determined yet for the shooting, though Cassidy, who is believed to have acted alone, was described by coworkers as being “disgruntled” about his job, according to the sheriff’s office.

Cassidy coordinated a fire at his home on Angmar Court in San Jose early Wednesday morning before going on the deadly rampage, the sheriff’s office believes. San Jose police and firefighters responded to the structure fire at 6:36 a.m., around the same time as calls came in about the shooting at the VTA rail yard less than 10 miles away.

The San Jose Fire Department, with help from the FBI and ATF, has been stationed outside Cassidy’s home since the shooting as the sheriff’s office has been serving search warrants to attempt to find clues surrounding the shooting.

The sheriff’s office released photos of the items found in Cassidy’s home on Friday:

While initial searches of the rail yard revealed potential explosives, further examination by bomb squad units from the sheriff’s office and San Jose Police Department found no explosives.

Cassidy reportedly fired 39 shots at the VTA Guadalupe facility on West Younger Avenue, killing multiple people before turning the gun on himself.

Cassidy fired shots in two buildings, officials said, and authorities found three semi-automatic handguns and 32 magazines full of ammunition in his possession. There also were bomb materials found in his work locker, officials said.

An investigation by NBC Bay Area found that Cassidy was under investigation for inappropriate behavior and was scheduled to attend a disciplinary hearing on the day of the attack.

Cassidy reportedly was also known by federal authorities prior to Wednesday's attack.

In 2016, U.S. Customs officials had detained and questioned Cassidy when they found on him books about terrorism and a notebook with notes detailing his hatred for his employer, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Journal wasn't able to confirm whether the findings were shared with VTA officials.
