SARATOGA, CA — Santa Clara County Fire Department officials said an existing fire break helped them contain a brush fire Tuesday to just one-quarter of an acre.
Crews responded to a 6:16 p.m. report of a vegetation fire near Charcoal Road, a trail a half-mile north of state Highway 35 in the Saratoga Gap Open Space Preserve. A ranger from the adjacent Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District provided an initial report on the fire and directed firefighters to the scene.

Once firefighters were able to get to the remote site, they were able to contain the fire within 40 minutes.
According to a news release from the fire department, "The slow rate of spread of the fire was due in large part to an existing shaded fuel break that had previously been constructed in the area through a partnership of agencies that included Cal Fire, Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, Santa Clara County Parks, Santa Clara County FireSafe Council and the South Skyline FireSafe Council."

This is the third brush fire this season slowed by such a fire break, fire officials said.
