Santa Clara County Reports 314 New Coronavirus Cases, 14 Deaths

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported 316 additional coronavirus cases Thursday.

The latest report brings the countywide case count to 108,255.

The county reported 14 additional coronavirus-related fatalities Thursday, bringing its COVID-19 death toll to 1,708.

There were 253 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the county as of Thursday of which 82 were being treated in intensive care units.

Elsewhere in the Bay Area and beyond, the Biden administration will fund coronavirus vaccinations in developing countries, Forbes reports.

The United States will send $2 billion to the to the COVAX global vaccination campaign and another $2 billion over the next two years according to the report.

President Joe Biden will announce the move Friday at the G7 summit, the report said.

A day after the San Leandro City Council voted on Tuesday to give grocery workers hazard pay, the California Grocers Association filed suit against the city.

Like Oakland, San Leandro's City Council voted to give grocery workers a temporary $5 per hour pay raise, which the grocers' association says is unconstitutional under state and federal law and violates the National Labor Relations Act.

The association Wednesday also filed suit against West Hollywood, which mandated a similar raise for grocery workers.

"The extra pay mandates will harm customers and workers," said Ron Fong, president and CEO of the grocers' association, in a statement.

Marin County small business owners will soon be able to apply for nearly $1 million in grants and interest-free loans from the county's pool of federal COVID-19 pandemic relief funding, county officials announced Thursday.

Starting Monday, qualified small business owners will have access to grants of up to $10,000 and loans of up to $50,000 through the Marin County Small Business Fund.

According to county officials, $800,000 in loans and $115,000 in grants will be made available through the fund. The county has contracted with San Francisco-based Mission Economic Development Agency to disperse the loans and grants.

There have been 3,508,410 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 48,042 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Thursday evening according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The United States had 27,889,830 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 492,809 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Thursday evening.

There have been 110,263,766 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,439,580 coronavirus-related deaths reported globally as of Thursday evening.
