Santa Clara University Women's Soccer Wins National Championship
The Broncos won their first national championship since 2001 and became the seventh program in NCAA history to win multiple national titles.
CARY, N.C. — The Santa Clara University women’s soccer team won the 2020 national championship on Monday, defeating Florida State in a penalty shootout. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and two 10-minute extra sessions, Santa Clara outscored Florida State 4-1 in penalty kicks to clinch its second title in school history.
Santa Clara, an 11-seed in the tournament, upset No. 2 North Carolina in the semifinals and then beat No. 1 Florida State in the championship for its first title since 2001. The 2020 tournament had been delayed from last fall due to the pandemic.
The Broncos came from behind after the Seminoles grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the second half. Kelsey Turnbow scored in the 84th minute to equalize, capitalizing on a turnover.
