South Bay School District Plans One Hour A Week Reopening

LOS GATOS, CA — The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District plans to reopen schools for one hour on one day of the week, a decision that has some parents rankled, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

District officials told the Chronicle that the plan would be part of a gradual easing of a return to in-person instruction, allowing students and staff time to learn safety protocols. The one-hour instruction would take place in cohorts on Wednesdays.

But members of a parent coalition hoping for a broader reopening are staging a protest on Friday afternoon at Los Gatos High School.

The plan, called Phase 3A, would only be in place for a short period of time and be implemented when Santa Clara County reaches the red tier in the state’s COVID-19 blueprint. The county is currently in the purple tier, but declining case rates have officials optimistic that it will move to the red tier soon.

According to the state's interactive map of school reopenings, all high schools in the Bay Area are still in distance learning.
